PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a leather-like sheet, not deteriorating the mechanical properties, such as strength, or the touch of the sheet, when one component is extracted from fibers. SOLUTION: This method for producing a leather-like sheet comprises producing melt-spun fibers from (C) an alkali metal-containing polyvinyl alcohol and (D) a thermoplastic polymer having a melting point of <=270 deg.C, producing a non-woven fabric from the melt-spun fibers, subjecting the non-woven fabric to the impregnation and coagulation of a polyurethane, extracting the component C with water, and, if necessary, then fuzzing the surface of the obtained sheet or forming a silver surface layer on the surface of the sheet. The alkali metal- containing polyvinyl alcohol C is prepared by adding (B) 0.0003-1 pt.wt. of an alkali metal ion to (A) polyvinyl alcohol having a polymerization degree of 200-500, a saponification degree of 90-99.99 mol.%, the molar fraction of the central hydroxyl groups of three hydroxyl group-linked chains by triad expression to vinyl alcohol units in a value of 70-99.9 mol.%, and a melting point of 160-230 deg.C.
