PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new lectin-like protein contained in a liquid of a fibrovascular bundle of a plant, having a specific lectin-like activity, suitable for an antimicrobial agent, etc. SOLUTION: This lectin-like protein is contained in a liquid of a fibrovascular bundle of a cucurbitaceous plant. The lectin-like protein is (A) a protein composed of an amino acid sequence of the formula or (B) a protein composed of an amino acid sequence in which one or plural amino acids are added, deleted or substituted in the amino acid sequence of the formula and which has hemagglutination activity. A gene encoding the lectin-like protein is inserted into a vector DNA to give a recombinant DNA. A transformant containing the recombinant DNA is prepared. The transformant is cultured in a medium and the lectin-like protein is collected from the culture product to preferably produce the lectin-like protein. Preferably an antimicrobial agent containing the lectin-like protein as an active ingredient is prepared. |
