PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a roller which can reduce the defects of electrostatic pattern transfer. SOLUTION: A roller used in a coating machine contains a metal core 1 having an outside cover 2 comprising a dielectric material, the cover 2 has a cutting pattern 3, and the core 1 has the second pattern 4 having a ridge which is interfaced with the pattern 3 in the cover 2 at a position below the pattern 3 in the cover 2. In this way, an electrostatic field generated at a position above a web supported on the roller is made substantially constant.
