907,405. Expanding-wheel gear. REIMERS, W. April 29, 1960 [April 30, 1959],No. 15063/60. Class 80 (2). An expanding pulley for a drive comprising two such pulleys connected by a belt or link chain comprises conical flanges 11, 12 splined to a sleeve 15 rotatably mounted on a drive shaft 14. Balls 23 are interposed between cam tracks 20, 21 formed on the end surfaces of the hub of the pulley flange 11 and on a cam bushing 22 fast with the driving shaft, and thus the flange 11 is urged towards the flange 12 with a force corresponding to the torque exerted on the shaft 14. The flange 12 reacts, through an oblique ball bearing 19, against a disc 18 fast with the shaft 14. Bearing 19 takes up both axial and radial forces. Alternatively bearing 19 can be replaced by a ball bearing near the periphery of the disc 18 which supports the flange axially, and a roller bearing which supports the flange radially. In a further modification the roller bearing is replaced by a second ball bearing which supports the flange both radially and axially. |
