PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an easy-to-use printer wherein a work or a time for a user is reduced by an automatic on-line recovery function and a malfunction due to the automatic on-line recovery can be prevented. SOLUTION: When a user executes setting of a printer 10, the user do that after setting the printer 10 to be in an off-line condition. When the user operates a button on an operation panel 18, a time counter in a panel operation waiting time measuring section 34 is reset to '0' and starts the measuring of a period of elapsed time until the button is operated again. A time-out detecting section 32 monitors the time measuring condition and determines that the time-out occurs when the period of the elapsed time exceeds a threshold. Upon the determination of the time-out, an automatic on-line recovery section 30 sends an instruction for switching to an on-line state to an on-line/off-line switch operating section 28 so that a host I/F 20 is switched from an off-line state to the on-line state.
