PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an accidental surge of the quantity of illumination light out of external endoscope light guides while light source devices are in operation. SOLUTION: A lamp 33 is opposed to the leading face of an LG connector 51 coupled to a light source device 30B, and a diaphragm 37 is interposed in the illumination light path between the lamp 33 and the LG connector 51. An illumination light limiting means 90 comprises a luminance distribution generation circuit 91 for extracting the distribution of luminance from video signals, a differentiation circuit 92 among others for computing variations or gradients in the luminance distribution phase diagram, a limitation determination circuit 95 for determining whether to limit the illumination light the lamp 33 emits toward a light incidence end face 53 of a light guide 52, and a limitation control circuit 96 for outputting limiting signals to limit illumination light incident on the light incidence end face 53 on the basis of the determination results of the limitation determination circuit 95. An output of limiting signals limits the incidence of illumination light on the light incidence end face 53.
