PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for polymerizing an α-olefin, showing a high polymerization activity by bringing a specific activator into contact with a specified carrier to give a suspension and evaporating the suspension in a prescribed reactor. SOLUTION: In supporting a compound (i) which is a transition metal compound of the group 4 to the group 6 of the periodic table and contains one or more substitutable cyclopentadiene ligands and an activator (ii) selected from aluminoxanes on a carrier (iii) composed of porous particles of a polyolefin, a process in which the carrier (iii) is brought into contact with a solution containing the activator (ii) to give a suspension and the suspension is evaporated in a reactor equipped with a stirrer having a raking element 1 is included, the raking element 1 is laid along the reactor in such a way that the distance between the edge of the element closest to the wall of the reactor and the wall of the reactor is 2-200 times as long as the average diameter of the particles of the carrier (iii), and the activator (ii) is supported on the carrier (iii) by using the reactor to give the objective catalyst for polymerizing an α-olefin.
