PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vapor compression refrigeration cycle adapted so that the leak of a refrigerant may be detected earlier to make the cycle proof against an accident. SOLUTION: An odorant and/or a colorant are added to carbon dioxide as the refrigerant. The colorant added is at least one member selected from among methyl mercaptan, ethyl mercaptan, propyl mercaptan, butyl mercaptan, dimethyl thioether, diethyl thioether, picoline, diacetyl, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, propyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, allyl methacrylate, ethyl propionate, methyl butyrate, butene, vinylacetylene, hexyne, o-methoxyphenol, and ammonia, and the colorant added is at least one member selected from among azo pigments ofβ-naphthol,β-hydroxynaphthoic acid, naphthol AS, acetanilide and pyrazolone types.
