PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a substantial improvement in throughput by shortening a time before next printing is started without damaging printed images. SOLUTION: A medium 202 is transferred on a platen 201 and ink drops are discharged from a head 205. At this time, the medium is sucked onto the platen via medium suction holes 208 by a medium-sucking fan 204 so as to prevent the medium from floating and cockling. The printed medium is cut by a cutter at a cutter notch 209. The medium suction holes 208 are set to both the upstream side and the downstream side of a cut position, and the sucking fan rotates for a predetermined time after the end of printing as well as during printing, with holding the medium piece on the platen until the ink on the medium piece is dried. An initial operation for next printing is carried out while the ink is dried.
