PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily and simply obtain the subject optically active 1,1,1- trifluoro-2-alkanol that is useful as a liquid crystal material or the like by subjecting a specific 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-alkanol and a fatty acid trichloroethyl ester to transesterification reaction by using an enzyme originating from a specific microorganism. SOLUTION: 1,1,1-Trifluoro-2-alkanol represented by formula I (R1 is a 1-20C alkyl; m is 0, 1; n is an integer of 1-10), for example, 7-ethoxy-1,1,1-trifluoro-2- heptanol or the like and a fatty acid trichloroethyl ester, for example, trichloroethyl caproate are subjected to transesterification reaction in the presence of a catalyst of an enzyme originating from Candida antarctica to obtain the objective optically active 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-alkanol which is useful as a chiral agent to be added to a liquid crystal composition or a raw material of a ferroelectric liquid crystal compound and the like [for example, (-)-7- ethoxy-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-heptanol or the like] in a simple manner.
