A controller for an electric power steering device which leads to high output and small size of a motor, relaxation of variation of relative position of magnetization with respect to the winding and of requirement of position sensing accuracy, improvement of steering operability, and reduction of device cost. The controller controls a DC motor or a brushless motor giving a steering assisting power to a steering mechanism according to a current controlled variable calculated from a steering assisting command variable calculated from the steering torque generated at the steering shaft and the current value of the motor, and the torque ripple of the motor is less than 10 %.
