<p>An occupant detection system (10) comprises an electric field sensor (100) in the seat bottom (42) of a vehicle seat (3) for discriminating objects on the seat (3), and a range/proximity sensor (200) for sensing the presence of an object proximate to a restraint actuator (39). The electric field sensor (100) discriminates normally seated occupants from other seating conditions, and disables the restraint actuator (39) unless a normally seated occupant (5) is present. The range/proximity sensor (200) disables the restraint actuator (39) if an occupant (5) is located in an at-risk zone (204) so as to be susceptible to injury by the restraint actuator.</p> |
