The steering shaft (1) has a steering wheel (2) with limited rotation range and at least one functional unit connected via a conductor to an element fixed to the vehicle body. The shaft has an aperture (4) with openings (5,6) near both ends of the shaft via which the conductor is contacted or fed out of the aperture. The opening is arranged on the rotation axis on the end of the shaft remote from the steering wheel. The conductor is of flexible material, passes through the aperture and deforms exclusively elastically over the rotation range.
