The invention relates to an SMES device comprising at least one coil (1) for connection in series with a voltage source and formed from an electrically insulated superconducting cable (4). The cable has inner superconducting means wound as the coil or coils and surrounding outer electrical insulation. The invention also relates to a high voltage system comprising an SMES device, in which the SMES device has superconducting conductor means wound as a coil and which is insulated against high voltage by an electric insulation system arranged concentrically around the conductor means.
