Production of 1,2-dichloroethane, used in the manufacture of vinyl chloride, by reaction of chlorine and ethylene in plant including a downdraft evaporator

1,2-Dichloroethane (I) is produced by a liquid phase reaction between ethylene and chlorine. Heavy fractions are separated from (I) in a heavy fraction column and in a downstream vacuum column. (I) is fed to heat exchanger and surrenders heat to the sump and respective sump product. The column sump is heated especially by a downdraft evaporator. The sump product is fed to the upper side of the downdraft liquid distributor.
