PROCESS FOR MAKING AN EMULSION

A process for making an emulsion. The method includes providing a piston apparatus defining a fluid pathway and a pumping bore, the pumping bore being in fluid communication with the fluid pathway. A reciprocable member is reciprocably disposed in the pumping bore. A first portion of the reciprocable member is disposed in fluid communication with the fluid pathway defined by the piston apparatus. The process further includes effecting sterilization of the fluid pathway and the first portion of the reciprocable member and effecting sterilization of the second portion of the reciprocable member. One or more emulsion constituents are directed into the fluid pathway defined by the piston apparatus after effecting sterilization of the fluid pathway, the first portion of the reciprocable member, and the second portion of the reciprocable member. In addition, the process includes reciprocating the reciprocable member within the pumping bore after effecting sterilization of the second portion of said reciprocable member.
