A system for exchanging heat with a body of a patient for cooling or warming the patient, provides for automatic temperature control in accordance with the monitored temperature of the patient. The system includes at least one fluid circuit (30) in communication with the indwelling catheter (20), and a temperature control module (24) wherein in body temperature measurements are used to control the temperature of the fluid circulating within the fluid circuit.
