A multifunction flow control valve has a cylindrical valve housing with a number of openings in the wall. The control valve comprises an elliptical valve element (2) mounted on a rotating control shaft (3) and dividing the volume inside the valve into two chambers (A,B) whose relative size and shape is controlled by the angular setting of the valve. The valve effectively switches the central openings to either side of the chamber.
