The extendable stirrup (2) includes an upper stirrup (4), a lower stirrup (6) slidably connected to the upper stirrup (4), a lock (71), a release and a retraction mechanism (50). The lower stirrup (6) slides between retracted and extended positions on the upper stirrup (4) and can be extended downward to give the rider a lower "step" for mounting the horse. A lock (71) is disposed on the upper and lower stirrups (4, 6) and engages in the extended position locking the lower stirrup (6) in the extended position. A release disengages the lock (71) upon downward movement of the lower stirrup (4) or, in an alternative embodiment, upon pressure applied to a trigger (191) on the upper foot plate (171) when the lower stirrup (176) is in the extended position. In either embodiment, when the release disengages, the lower stirrup (6, 176) automatically retracts toward the upper stirrup (4, 174).
