A method for producing epsilon -caprolactam by reacting cyclohexanone with a nitrogen source and oxygen wherein epsilon -caprolactam is produced from cyclohexanone in a single stage at a high selectivity by effecting the reaction in the presence of an oxide catalyst containing one or more metals M(s) selected from metals belonging to the groups 3 to 12 in the periodic table.
