PURPOSE: An antioxidant is provided which has high antioxidation activity, low discoloration property and can be produced at lower price. CONSTITUTION: A antioxidant is produced by the following steps: (a) reacting phenol and olefin having C3-C13 in the presence of an acid catalyst at 85-90°C; (b) reacting the alkylated phenol having C9-C45 obtained from (a), a monomercaptan having C5-C15, a formaldehyde, and a dialkylamine as a catalyst at 55-150°C. The molar ratio of phenol, olefin, monomercaptan, and formaldehyde ranges from 1:0.5:0.5:0.5 to 1:2.5:2.5:5.0 and the total amount of the olefin and the monomercaptan ranges from 1.0 mol to 5.0 mol based on the phenol of 1 mol.
