PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling automatic connection of a video phone and a method thereof are provided to connect to the video phone by simply approaching the video phone. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for controlling automatic connection of a video phone includes a ring tone detector(8), a mean value calculator(9), a difference calculator(10), a reference value memory(11), and a comparator(12). The ring tone detector(8) detects the incoming call to a controller of the phone by using a ring tone. The mean value calculator(9) calculates the mean values of the brightness and color signals of the processed image signal by a digital signal processor(30) on a frame basis. The difference calculator(10) calculates the difference between current mean values of the brightness and color signals and the previous values. The reference value memory(11) stores a reference value for determining whether a user is approaching or not. The comparator(12) controls a speaker and a microphone included in the phone.
