PURPOSE: A method for inputting data using a jog unit is provided to input a character message without a plurality of key operations, by installing the jog unit on a cellular phone that can input the data of characters and numbers, resulting in increase of convenience in use of the cellular phone. CONSTITUTION: If a joggling signal is detected in a standby state, it is checked whether the detected signal is a selection joggling signal for executing an instruction(211),(213). A menu manual is displayed if the selection joggling signal has been detected(214). It is checked again whether the joggling signal is detected(221). The menu manual is displayed in a direction of the joggling signal or reverse direction according to the directions of the detected joggling signal(227-233), and a selected menu is displayed in case of the selection joggling signal(235). A character message for requesting an input of data is displayed and a character data pad is displayed(241),(243). If the selection joggling signal is detected again, the corresponding character data is stored(245-249). A job corresponding to the selected menu is executed(251).
