PURPOSE: A portable computer with expansion bay is disclosed to expand a portable computer's capabilities similar to a desktop computer without causing any inconveniences to carrying and movement of a portable computer. CONSTITUTION: A portable computer with expansion bay is primarily composed of a portable computer, bay, and expansion slots. A portable computer(10) is equipped with a bay(50) in its base(20). The bay is equipped with slots(56), which are installed for insertion of expansion boards(80) and expansion of portable computer(10)'s capabilities. Audio board, modem or fax modem boards, video board, and hard drive are examples of expansion boards. The bay uses a flat cable(58), a FFC(flat flex cable) or a FPC(flex printed circuitry), to periodically communicate with the base's motherboard(30). The slots of the bay is connected to the mother board by flat cable. portable computer(10)'s capabilities are greatly expanded by the bay and the expansion slots. Because the bay is integrated inside the computer, the need to carry additional hardwares is eliminated and its portability and mobility is not hindered.
