PURPOSE: An apparatus for an automatic redial in an exchange system and a method for the same are provided to increase possibility of a telephone call to the other person, by automatically dialing other phone numbers related to the other person in sequential when a member of a public line is absent or the public line of the member is busy. CONSTITUTION: If a telephone bell rings(S1), a controller(111) of an exchange(11) detects a busy tone and ring-back tone(S2) and then call the same phone number again after a predetermined time(S3). If the ring-t a member responds to the call(S4). If other person or an answering machine respond to the call, it is determined that an automatic redial be requested(S5,S6). If the redial has been requested, the controller(111) terminates the current call, searches a memory(115) to find the related phone numbers and then calls the phone numbers to generates a call sound at a telephone set of a public line(S7). Returning to S3, the controller(111) forms a communication path to make a phone call(S8).
