PURPOSE: An apparatus for scanning images and a method thereof are provided to input real reference image from the outside instead of consulting database. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for scanning images includes an image input, a reference image region calculator, an editor, a scanner, and a scan image output. The image input inputs real reference image from the outside to scan the required image. The reference image region calculator receives the real reference image from the image input and calculates the reference image region. The editor adjusts real reference image to a proper size and locates the image of proper size on a proper location of initial reference image. The scanner detects arbitrary characteristic from the adjusted reference image and compares the reference image with a stored image to be scanned. The scan image output outputs an image similar to the reference image to a monitor.
