PURPOSE: A method for controlling power-saving operation of an air conditioner is provided to improve the power-saving operation of an air conditioner by effectively controlling the operation state of a compressor with variable on and off periods. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling power-saving operation of an air conditioner includes the steps of determining whether a power-saving operation is selected or not according to tuning on or off of a power-saving operation switch(S201), determining whether a current room temperature is higher than a preset reference temperature or not if the power-saving operation is selected(S202), decreasing the current room temperature by controlling an operation of a compressor with an on-off period in which an off-period is longer than an on-period(S203), while increasing the current room temperature by controlling the operation of the compressor with an on-off period in which the on-period is longer than the off-period(S205), performing a normal power-saving operation for maintaining the room temperature equal to or 1°C higher than the reference temperature(S207,S206) if the current room temperature reaches the preset reference temperature(S204).
