A method for converting a tile, representing part of a digital image, into compressed data comprises the steps of: determining if the tile classifies as a low-detail (background) tile; if it is a low detail tile, determining at most 4 pixel values and generating compressed data based on said pixel values. In one embodiment of the invention, the system determines the average pixel component value in a tile (block). It then determines whether the difference between the average value and any pixel component in the block is greater than a predetermined threshold range. If it is within the threshold range, the image is a high detail image and is transform encoded; whereas if it is outside of the threshold the image is a low detail image and the tile is used to determine four pixel values which are JPEG encoded. |
