PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling communication of a video phone used as an outer modem of PC and a method for controlling the same are provided to use the video phone as a modem of a PC. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for controlling communication of a video phone used as an outer modem of PC includes a serial port(9), a data switch(10), and a modem controller(11). The serial port(9) are connected serially to the PC as an interface. The data switch(10) determines a data path of commands from the PC or the data input from an image encoder/decoder or the data from the modem(6) responding to a system controller(7). The modem controller(11) controls according to the command from the data switch or the response of the system of the other part.
