PURPOSE: An idle hand-off method in the mobile communication system is provided to maximize the battery usage time of a mobile communication terminal by minimizing the current consumption. CONSTITUTION: Power is supplied to a mobile station(S1). The mobile station attains the system of a signal having the largest signal strength among a variety of signals of base stations(S2). The mobile station repeats slip state and idle state in a uniform period and operates on a slot mode(S3). The mobile station monitors signals of various signal sets, maintaining the idle state(S4). The mobile station, judging that the signal strength of a neighbor set - the signal strength of a active set is 2dB and above, researches signals of various signal sets, maintaining the idle state(S5). The mobile station, judging that the signal strength of a neighbor set - the signal strength of a active set is 3dB and above, executes the idle hand-off(S6).
