PURPOSE: A playing back method for sector-repeating in a VCR is provided to rewind or review a video tape to the starting point of a block repetition by counting a time from a starting point to a finishing point of the block repetition to convert the counted time into a rewind or a review times while playing back a video tape. CONSTITUTION: A starting point of a block repetition is selected while playing back a video tape and the time from the starting point is counted. When a finishing point of the block repetition is selected, the playing back mode is converted into a stop mode while storing the counted time of block repetition in a memory after converting into a rewind time or into a review time. Also, the converted stop mode is converted into a rewind mode or into a review mode for counting the time while rewinding or reviewing the video tape. If the counted time reaches the stored rewind or review time stored in the memory, the corresponding point is decided as the starting point of the block repetition. Therefore, the rewind or the review mode is converted into the play back mode for playing back the video tape from the starting point of the block repetition while counting the time again. If the counted time reaches the time of block repetition stored in the memory, the corresponding point is decided as the end point of the block repetition for converting the play back mode into the rewind mode or into the review mode while operating the method repeatedly.
