PURPOSE: A method for surface modifying an alpha silicon carbide sintered body by constituting fine particles on the surface and relatively large particles inside is provided which produces an alpha silicon carbide sintered body having high abrasion resistance and resistance to quick destruction. CONSTITUTION: An alpha silicon carbide sintered body, which is usable for structural materials of cutting tools and guide rollers for hot rolling soft cast iron requiring abrasion resistance, is prepared. Thus, raw material powders A, which are mixed alumina and yttria with alpha silicon carbide having a size of below 1 micrometer are constituted on the surface, raw material powders B, which are mixed alpha silicon carbide seed particles having a size of 3 micrometer for promoting particle growth with the raw material powder A are constituted inside and sintered at 2,000 to 2,050°C for 3 to 6 hr.
