PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actualize excellent recording and reproduction characteristics by initializing a phase shift optical recording medium uniformly in a short time. SOLUTION: The disclosed initializing method for a phase shift optical recording medium moves optical heads 131 and 133 in the X2 direction and optical heads 132 and 134 in the X1 direction interlocking with one another with their arrangement intervals maintained while irradiating the recording film of the phase shift optical recording disk 12 with light beams of power close to the power to start crystallization of the recording film of the phase shift optical recording disk 12 with respect to optical heads 131 to 133 and irradiating the recording film of the phase shift optical recording disk 12 with a light beam of power not enough to melt the recording film with respect to the optical head 13.
