PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polycarbonate having slight impurities content such as a remaining monomer or oligomer, etc., having excellent physical properties such as impact strength and useful as an optical material or a blow molding material. SOLUTION: This polycarbonate is obtained by preparing a polycarbonate prepolymer by a prepolymerization and polymerizing the prepolymer in a solid state, a swollen solid state or a molten thin film state by a transesterification and has <100 ppm residual monomer content, especially <100 ppm dihydroxy compound content, or <=3.5 wt.% acetone soluble content, of <15 mol.% hydroxy terminal fraction. The optical material or the blow molding material is obtained by using the polycarbonate.
