PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical shaft type pump-turbine to perform racing starting reduced in energy consumption when a pumping operation is started, prevent a deviated fluid force from being exerted on a runner, and start with less vibration and to provide a pumping starting method. SOLUTION: This vertical shaft type pump-turbine comprises a runner 5 fixed at the upper part of a main shaft 9 with a blade situated above and a crown below; a casing 1 to surround the outer peripheral part of a runner; a penstock 26 to communicate the casing 1 and an upper pond; a reversible water-turbine 16 having a pair of upper and lower covers 6 and 7 of which a runner chamber 13 consists; a draft tube 8 connected to the outlet of the reversible water-turbine 16 and communicating the runner chamber 13 with the lower pond side; and a generator motor 14 fixed at the lower part of the main shaft 9. The draft tube 8 comprises a protrusion-shaped pipe line 30 rising upward from a connection with the reversible water-turbine 16 and subsequently curved downward and formed in a protrusion shape; and a U-shaped pipe line part 27 connected to and arranged on the side closer to the lower pond than the protrusion-shaped pipe line part 30. The pipe line upper wall part 32 of the U-shaped pipe line part 27 is arranged in a position lower than that of the pipe line bottom wall part 31 of the protrusion-shaped pipe line part 30.
