PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To relieve the burden of an key operation in the case of inputting a single KANJI(Chinese character) in KANA(Japanese syllabary)/KANJI conversion for converting an idiomatic phrase by converting character strings into KANJI, judging propriety in the list display of obtained KANA/KANJI conversion candidates and displaying the candidates by means of list, which are judged to be possible in list display. SOLUTION: It is judged whether an inputted signal is a KANJI conversion indication or not (S2). Inputted KANA characters are successively stored in a KANA input buffer (S3). A KANA character string is converted into plural KANJI character strings to be the candidates and stored in a KANA/KANJI conversion candidate buffer in priority order (S4). It is judged whether the plural stored KANJI character strings to be the candidates are the ones to be displayed by change-over or the ones to be displayed by list (S5). The KANJI character strings which are judged to be the change- over candidates are successively stored in a change-over display output buffer in order (S6). The KANJI character strings judged to be displayed by list are stored in a list display output buffer in order (S7). The display of the stored KANJI conversion candidates and the selection and establishment of the candidates are controlled (S8).
