PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a treating agent which imparts a durable water repellency to a solid material by using a vinyl polymer having carbosiloxane dendrimer structures on the side chains as the major ingredient. SOLUTION: Preferably, the carbosiloxane dendrimer structure in the vinyl polymer is represented by formula I (wherein Z is a divalent organic group; p is 0 or 1: R1 is 1-10C alkyl or aryl; X1 is silylalkyl represented by formula II of which i is 1; R2 is 2-10C alkylene; R3 is 1-10C alkyl; Xi+1 is H, R1, or Xi of formula H; i is an integer of 1-10, denoting the hierarchy of the silylalkyl group of formula II; and ai is an integer of 0-3). Preferably, the vinyl polymer having the carbosiloxane dendrimer structures of formula I on the side chains has a number average mol.wt. of 5,000-1,000,000. A spray-type water repellent is prepared from 0.5-20 wt.% above vinyl polymer, 30-98.5 wt.% organic solvent, and 1-50 wt.% propellant gas.
