PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase a compression ratio to a high value by increasing piston displacement without the occurrence of a trouble to homogeneous combustion performance. SOLUTION: A slope 3 consisting of a conical surface formed on the outer peripheral side of the ridge line 5 of the peripheral edge of a cavity 4 consists of first and second slopes 3A and 3B and angles in two stages. In this way, when piston displacement is increased and a compression ratio is increased, the first slope 3A is gently inclined by the rise of the second slope 3B and connected to the ridge line 5. Since a flat part by which block of propagation of flame is caused is not formed at the outside of the ridge line 5, propagation of flame during homogeneous combustion is maintained in an excellent state and a compression ratio is increased.
