PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely remove toner on an intermediate transfer body, and to reduce wearing of the intermediate transfer body. SOLUTION: At the time of a cleaning sequence for removing toner remaining on the intermediate transfer body 6 surface after the secondary transfer, the toner 12 can surely be removed by applying cleaning bias while abutting a cleaning bias applying roller 9a on the intermediate transfer body 6 surface thereby turning the negative toner 11 to the positive toner 12 to be ready to remove the toner, and then abutting a cleaning blade 10a on the intermediate transfer body to remove the toner. Moreover, the roller 9a and the cleaning blade 10a are abutted on the intermediate transfer body 6 surface only at the cleaning sequence, and are made away from the intermediate transfer body 6 surface at the time other than the sequence time. Thus the wear of the intermediate transfer body 6 surface can be reduced.
