PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character generating device capable of generating desired bold characters from an outline font without incurring complexity in hardware. SOLUTION: The character generating device, which stores outline font data having character information as vector data in a font ROM 6 and which creates a bitmap image of character information based on the vector data of the outline font data read from the font ROM 6, is provided with a CPU for creating a bitmap image of an outline forming a normal character from the vector data of the outline font data, for adding plural dot patterns to one dot of the outline and creating a bitmap image of a bold outline, for ORing the bitmap image of the created normal character and the bitmap image of the bold outline, and for creating a bold character bitmap image with the bold outline and developing it in a bitmap memory 8.
