PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head having an excellent linear responsiveness and suppressed Barkhausen noise in which a heat generated by the constant detection current can be efficiently dissipated, and thermal diffusion by temp. increase in MR element layer, burnout, decrease in output and deterioration in exchange anisotropic magnetic field are suppressed. SOLUTION: A thin film magnetic head has at least a magneto-resistance effect element layer 45 formed on a lower shield layer 53 through a lower gap layer 54, electrode layer 48 to apply a detection current on the magneto- resistance effect element layer 45, and upper shield layer 57 formed on the electrode layer 48 through an upper gap layer 56. At least one of the lower gap layer 54 and the upper gap layer 56 has an insulating layer having high thermal conductivity containing at least Al, N, X and O, wherein X is one or more elements selected from Si, B, Ge and C.
