PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for improving the cloud point of a polymer containing a monomer giving a homopolymer having a cloud point by using a decreased amount of a copolymerizable monomer while controlling the molecular weight. SOLUTION: A monomer (A) giving a homopolymer having a cloud point is copolymerized with another monomer (B) to improve the cloud point of the polymer. The monomer (B) contains a monomer (b) having dissociable group. The monomer A is copolymerized with the monomer B in the presence of a mercaptan and/or sulfide having a dissociable group in the molecule. The charge of the dissociable group of the mercaptan or sulfide is the same as that of the dissociable group of the monomer (b).
