PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound simply at a low cost, useful as a raw material for a liquid crystal compound used for a display elemental device, by reacting a hydroxyphenylcyclohexanone compound with a specified glycol compound in the presence of an acidic substance. SOLUTION: The compound of formula II [for example, 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl) cyclohexanone ethylene ketal] is obtained by reacting a 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl) cyclohexanone compound of formula I [R1 and R2 are each a 1-4C alkyl; X is a single bond, CH2 or the like; (m) and (n) are each 0-3] [for example, 4-(4- hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexanone] with a glycol compound of the formula: HO-R'- OH (R' is a 1-6C alkylene) (for example, ethylene glycol) in the presence of an acidic substance (for example, phosphoric acid). The reaction is preferably carried out using 1-2 mols of the glycol compound per mol of the cyclohexanone compound and 0.01-5 equivalent of the acidic substance per equivalent of the cyclohexanone compound at 50-150 deg.C for 1-8 hr.
