PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder which can surely supply paper in accordance with characteristics of a sheet, that is, a weight, a size, a curling condition and a surface-treated condition thereof. SOLUTION: A paper supply head 300 in a paper feeder 200 has a vacuum source which can capture sheets in the upper part of a stack 53, and release them from the stack. The supply head 300 is provided with a stack height sensor 350 arranged so as to make contact with the top surface of the stack with a predetermined timing synchronized with reciprocation of the paper feed head. With this stack height sensor 350, a space between the function surface 302 of the paper feed head and the top surface of the stack is appropriately held.
