PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aluminum phosphate having a high pore volume and useful as a catalytic material such as a catalyst or a catalyst carrier, or as a lightweight material such as a lightweight heat-insulating material by adding zinc to aluminum in a specific atomic ratio and specifying the volume of the pores of the prepared aluminum phosphate. SOLUTION: This aluminum phosphate contains zinc in a zinc: aluminum atomic ratio (Zn:Al) of 1:10 to 1:1, and has a pore volume of >=2 cc/g, especially 2 to 5 cc/g. The aluminum phosphate is not a simple mixture of aluminum phosphate with zinc phosphate but the composite material (solid solution) of both the substances according to XRD analysis and FT-IR analysis. The pore volume is measured by a mercury penetration method. The aluminum phosphate is obtained by drying a slurry-like mixture comprising aluminum phosphate, zinc phosphate, oxalic acid and water, and then thermally treating the dried product at temperature of 300-550 deg.C.
