PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful for an optical material of a high quality having high refractive index at a high yield by reacting a specific epoxy compound with a thiourea compound in a specific solvent at a specific range of temperature. SOLUTION: This compound has a structure of formula II and is obtained by reacting an epoxy compound (e.g. an organic compound having an epithio group, an epithioalkyloxy group, an epithioalkylthio group, an epithioalkylseleno group or an epithioalkyltelluro group) having a structure of formula I [R1 is a 0-10C hydrocarbon; R2-R4 are each a 1-10C hydrocarbon group or H; Y is O, S, Se or Te; (n) is 0 or 1] with a thiourea compound in a mixed solvent of a polar solvent in which the thiourea compound can be dissolved (e.g. an alcohol) with a non-polar organic solvent in which the epoxy compound can be dissolved (e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon) (preferably a volume ratio of water/ organic solvents is 0.1-10.0) at 10-30 deg.C preferably in the presence of an acid and/or an acid anhydride.
