PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a magnetic recording medium generally utilized for computer data storage and used in a rigid disk drive. SOLUTION: A substrate 11 is prepared, a chromium-containing underlayer is deposited, a cobalt alloy-containing 1st layer having <=20Åthickness is deposited on the underlayer and a cobalt-platinum alloy-containing 2nd layer is deposited on the 1st layer. The 1st layer is deposited under equilibrium or nearly equilibrium crystal growth conditions so as to form a high-grade crystal structure.
