PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image read technology that can obtain image information with high resolution, without causing degradation of light receiving sensitivity in the case of using a linear sensor to read the image information. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with a linear sensor L that reads an image of an image-forming medium, a contorl section that scans the linear sensor L in a main scanning direction in which many pixel sensors S1,..., S4 which are the components of the linear sensor L are arranged at a prescribed pitch P and in a subscanning direction that is orthogonal to the main scanning direction, and a drive means that moves the linear sensor L from a 1st position to a 2nd position in the main scanning direction. The distance between the 1st position and the 2nd position is selected to be a half of the pitch P so as to cause the control section to scan the linear sensor L and form the image forming medium at both the 1st and 2nd positions.
