This invention provides a means of diagnosing the rate of progress and susceptibility of an individual to HIV-induced AIDS, the invention being based on analysing an individual's HLA B and HLA DR beta chain haplotype. Additionally, an immunological composition comprising a peptide fragment or portion of said fragment from HIV-1 gp120 C5 (amino acid residues 70-76 of gp 120) for immunising or tolerizing an individual against HIV-induced AIDS.
