During the riveting process the rivet (8) is put under tension (T) which crushes the initially cylindrical part (17) of the washer (12). The rivet is then put under compression to crush and flatten the tip of the rivet and the head (14), so as to produce a broad flat head on the panel (2) side and a slightly smaller head on the rail (3) side, bearing against the washer. The process may be performed by an industrial robot.
